Overview
Libya holds some of the Mediterranean's most spectacular Roman and Greek ruins at Leptis Magna, Sabratha and Cyrene, plus the breathtaking Saharan oases and rock art of the Acacus Mountains. Its blend of classical heritage and desert grandeur is extraordinary. Ongoing instability, however, keeps it largely closed to independent travelers.
Visa requirements
Visas must be arranged in advance, typically through an authorized tour operator that handles invitations and entry permits.
Safety information
Libya remains unstable with armed-group activity, kidnapping risk and the threat of renewed conflict, and most governments advise against all travel. Any visit should only be undertaken with a specialist operator providing security arrangements.
Travel tips
Carry US dollars and euros to exchange plus Libyan dinars in cash, as cards do not work. Arabic is essential and you must travel with a trusted, security-aware operator. Communications can be unreliable, so arrange contacts and contingency plans in advance.
