Overview

Lithuania's baroque capital Vilnius boasts one of Europe's largest preserved old towns and the quirky self-declared artists' republic of Užupis. The haunting Hill of Crosses, the curving sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, and Trakai's lakeside castle add variety. A deep folk heritage and dynamic food scene make it increasingly popular.

Visa requirements

An EU and Schengen member, Lithuania allows visa-free entry for many nationalities including US, UK, Canadian and Australian visitors for up to 90 days within 180 days.

Safety information

Lithuania is safe with low crime, though petty theft can occur in tourist zones of Vilnius. Take normal precautions and be cautious of icy pavements in winter.

Travel tips

Cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. Vilnius is very walkable, and intercity buses are punctual and affordable. English is widely spoken among younger Lithuanians, and SIM cards are cheap.
