Overview

One of Europe's least-visited countries, Moldova is wine country at heart, home to Mileștii Mici and Cricova—among the world's largest underground cellars. Rolling vineyards, the cave monastery of Orheiul Vechi, and the curious Soviet time-capsule of Transnistria reward the curious. Warm rural hospitality and rock-bottom prices add to the appeal.

Visa requirements

EU, US, UK, Canadian and many other nationals can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days with a valid passport.

Safety information

Moldova is generally safe with low violent crime, though petty theft occurs in Chișinău. The breakaway Transnistria region has its own controls, so research carefully before visiting.

Travel tips

Carry cash in lei as card acceptance is limited outside Chișinău. Marshrutka minibuses are the main way to reach towns and villages. Wineries usually require advance booking for tours, and local SIMs are very cheap.
