Overview
Straddling the equator in the Gulf of Guinea, this lush volcanic archipelago is draped in rainforest, cocoa plantations and dramatic peaks like the needle-like Pico Cão Grande. Empty beaches, endemic birds and a sleepy Lusophone charm make it a true off-grid escape. It is sometimes called 'Africa's Galápagos' for its biodiversity.
Visa requirements
Many nationalities enter visa-free or with an easy e-visa for short tourist stays; check current rules.
Safety information
This tiny island nation is peaceful and among Africa's safest, with only minor petty theft to watch for. Medical facilities are very limited, so carry good travel insurance and any needed medicines.
Travel tips
Carry dobras in cash as cards are rarely accepted and ATMs are few, and bring euros to exchange. Portuguese is essential, so learn a few phrases, and book the small Príncipe flights or boats ahead. Connectivity is limited, so buy a CST SIM and expect a slow pace.
