Overview
The only Pacific nation never colonized, Tonga remains a proud Polynesian kingdom of more than 170 islands ruled by tradition and faith. It is one of the few places on earth where you can swim alongside humpback whales, while ancient royal tombs, blowholes, and quiet white-sand islets reward unhurried explorers.
Visa requirements
Most visitors receive a free visitor's visa on arrival valid for up to 31 days, extendable locally. A passport valid for six months and onward travel proof are required.
Safety information
Tonga is generally safe with low violent crime and friendly locals, though petty theft can occur. Sundays are strictly observed with most businesses closed, and the kingdom lies in a cyclone and seismic zone.
Travel tips
Carry pa'anga in cash as card use is limited outside Nuku'alofa. Respect the strict Sunday closures by planning meals and travel ahead. Buy a Digicel or TCC SIM for mobile data near the main islands.
