Visa requirements
Part of the Schengen Area. EU/EEA citizens can enter freely. Most Western nations (USA, Canada, Australia, UK) enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Getting around
Austria's excellent ÖBB rail network and Railjet trains connect cities quickly, with buses covering rural areas and budget flights rarely needed for such a compact country. Cities like Vienna have superb metro (U-Bahn), tram and bus systems on integrated tickets, and taxis plus ride-hailing (Bolt, Uber) are easy to find.
Safety
One of the safest countries in Europe. Extremely low crime rates. Excellent healthcare system. Roads are well-maintained. The main risks are winter mountain hazards for skiers and hikers.
Tipping customs
Tipping is customary but small. In restaurants and cafés round up or add about 5–10%, telling the server the total amount as you pay rather than leaving coins on the table. Round up taxi fares and leave a euro or two for hotel porters and housekeeping.
Travel tips
The Vienna City Card offers unlimited public transport plus museum discounts — worth it for 2+ days. Kaffeehäuser (coffee houses) are a UNESCO cultural heritage — sit, read, and linger. Mountain trails require proper hiking boots even in summer.
