Getting around
Trains run along the Nile between Cairo, Luxor and Aswan (including sleeper trains), while domestic flights save time over long desert distances and buses serve the coasts and Sinai. In cities, metered taxis, the Cairo metro, and ride-hailing apps Uber and Careem are the easiest and most transparent ways to get around.
Safety
Main tourist areas are generally safe with heavy security presence. Check advisories for Sinai.
Tipping customs
Tipping, known as 'baksheesh', is deeply ingrained and expected for almost every service. Leave around 10% in restaurants (even if a service charge is added), round up taxi fares and tip drivers, and keep small notes ready for hotel porters, housekeeping, guides and attendants.
Travel tips
Bargaining is expected everywhere. Baksheesh (tipping) is part of the culture. Hire licensed guides at major sites.
