Visa requirements
Part of the Schengen Area. EU/EEA citizens enter freely. USA, Canada, Australia, UK enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
Getting around
Finland's VR trains connect Helsinki with Tampere, Turku and Lapland (including overnight sleepers), with long-distance buses and domestic flights covering the far north. Helsinki has trams, metro, buses and ferries on the HSL ticketing system, and taxis plus ride-hailing apps are available in cities.
Safety
One of the world's safest countries and consistently among the happiest nations. Virtually no violent crime against tourists. Winter hazards include extreme cold (especially Lapland, down to -40°C) — dress in multiple layers. Ice roads and frozen lake crossings are managed but require caution.
Tipping customs
Tipping is not expected as service is included in prices. Rounding up a restaurant bill for great service is appreciated but optional, and taxis and hotels carry no tipping obligation, though a small tip for exceptional help is welcome.
Travel tips
Sauna is not optional — embrace it as a social institution. A mökki (summer cottage) on a lake is the quintessential Finnish experience. Helsinki's Market Square and Design District are walkable highlights. Reindeer safaris and ice fishing in Lapland are bucket-list winter activities.
