Visa requirements

e-Visa available for 170+ countries online for stays up to 60 days (tourist). Apply at least 4 days before travel. Single, double, and multiple entry options available.

Getting around

India's vast railway network is the iconic way to travel between cities (book classes in advance), supplemented by extensive buses and cheap domestic flights (IndiGo, Air India) for long distances. Within cities, metros are expanding fast in Delhi, Mumbai and beyond, while auto-rickshaws and ride-hailing apps Ola and Uber are the everyday way to get around.

Safety

Generally safe for tourists with awareness. Solo female travellers should take extra precautions. Petty theft common in crowded areas. Drink only bottled/purified water. Traffic is chaotic by Western standards.

Tipping customs

Tipping is customary in service settings. Leave around 10% in restaurants (check for an existing service charge), round up taxi and auto-rickshaw fares or tip a little, and keep small notes for hotel porters, housekeeping and helpful staff.

Travel tips

Book trains well in advance using the IRCTC website. Bargaining is expected in markets. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites — cover shoulders and knees. Be cautious with street food until your stomach acclimatizes.
