Visa requirements

US, Canadian, EU citizens don't need a visa. A tourist card (FMM) is required.

Getting around

With little passenger rail, Mexico relies on an excellent network of comfortable long-distance buses (ADO, ETN) and cheap domestic flights to cover its size. Mexico City has an extensive, inexpensive metro and Metrobús, and ride-hailing apps Uber and DiDi are widely used and safer than hailing street taxis.

Safety

Safety varies significantly by region. Tourist areas are generally safe.

Tipping customs

Tipping (la propina) is expected in many settings. Leave 10–15% in restaurants (check it isn't already included), tip a little for taxis though it's optional, and give small change to hotel porters, housekeeping and grocery baggers; tip in pesos where possible.

Travel tips

Drink bottled water. Use official taxis or Uber. Tip 10-15% in restaurants.
