Visa requirements
Citizens of 60+ countries are visa-free for up to 90 days. Australian citizens can stay indefinitely. Others require a New Zealand Visitor Visa. NZeTA (Electronic Travel Authority) required for most visa-waiver countries — apply online for NZD $23.
Getting around
With limited scenic rail, getting between cities relies on domestic flights (Air New Zealand, Jetstar), InterCity coaches, and the Cook Strait ferry between the North and South Islands. Renting a car or campervan is the most popular way to explore, while cities have buses (and ferries in Auckland) plus Uber and taxis.
Safety
One of the safest travel destinations in the world. Very low crime rates. Primary risks are outdoor adventure activities — always hike with proper gear and tell someone your plans.
Tipping customs
Tipping is not expected thanks to fair wages and is genuinely optional. Leaving 10% for exceptional restaurant service is a kind gesture, but taxis and hotels carry no tipping obligation.
Travel tips
Renting a campervan is the classic way to explore. Freedom camping is allowed in designated areas. Always leave no trace in national parks. Book popular Great Walks months in advance. Driving is on the left.
