Visa requirements

Getting around
As an archipelago, the Philippines depends on domestic flights (Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines) and ferries to connect its islands, with buses and vans handling overland routes. In Manila and Cebu, the ride-hailing app Grab is the easiest way around, alongside iconic jeepneys, tricycles and the Manila LRT/MRT lines.
Safety
Safety varies greatly by island. Tourist areas are generally safe. Check advisories for Mindanao.
Tipping customs
Tipping is appreciated and increasingly common. Many restaurants add a 10% service charge, so extra is optional; otherwise leave around 10%, round up taxi fares, and give small change to hotel porters and housekeeping.
Travel tips
Island hopping is essential. Bring cash — ATMs aren't everywhere. Learn a few Tagalog words.
