Visa requirements
Part of the Schengen Area. EU/EEA citizens enter freely. USA, Canada, Australia, UK enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
Getting around
Poland's PKP Intercity trains and FlixBus coaches connect Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk and Wrocław affordably, with no need for domestic flights. Cities have trams, buses and a metro in Warsaw on integrated tickets, and taxis plus apps like Bolt, Uber and FreeNow are widely available.
Safety
Very safe for tourists. Low violent crime. Watch for pickpockets in Kraków's Old Town and at major train stations. Drink tap water freely. Healthcare has improved significantly — EU-standard in major cities.
Tipping customs
Tipping is customary, usually around 10%. Hand the tip directly or state the total as you pay rather than leaving it on the table, and note that saying 'thank you' when handing over money can mean 'keep the change'. Round up taxi fares and leave small change for hotel staff.
Travel tips
Poland is great value — restaurants, accommodation, and transport cost significantly less than Western Europe. PKP intercity trains link major cities efficiently. Kraków's Kazimierz district is the must-visit Jewish quarter. Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial requires a guided tour during peak hours — book in advance.
