Getting around
Intercity travel relies on modern highways with comfortable buses connecting Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, as the country is compact and has no intercity passenger rail yet. Dubai has a driverless metro, tram and buses on the Nol card, and taxis plus ride-hailing apps Careem and Uber are abundant and reliable.
Safety
The UAE is extremely safe. Respect local laws regarding public conduct and alcohol.
Tipping customs
Tipping is appreciated though not mandatory. Restaurants often add a 10% service charge, so an extra 10–15% in cash for good service is generous; round up taxi fares, and tip hotel porters and housekeeping a few dirhams.
Travel tips
Dress modestly in public areas. Alcohol only in licensed venues. Friday is the day of rest.
