Best time to visit
Spring (April–June) and Fall (September–October) for most regions. Summer for Alaska and the northern states. Winter for Florida and the Southwest desert.

Visa requirements

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) required for VWP countries. Citizens of 40+ countries can apply online for $21 for stays up to 90 days. All others need a B-1/B-2 visa.

Getting around

The US is huge, so domestic flights dominate intercity travel, with Amtrak rail strong mainly on the Northeast Corridor and intercity buses (Greyhound, FlixBus) as budget options. Outside a few cities with good metro/subway systems (New York, Chicago, DC), a rental car is often essential, while Uber and Lyft are available almost everywhere.

Safety

Generally safe for tourists. Exercise urban street awareness in major cities. Healthcare is world-class but expensive — travel insurance is essential.

Tipping customs

Tipping is essential, as service staff rely on it. Leave 15–20% in restaurants (larger groups may have it auto-added), tip taxi and rideshare drivers about 15–20%, give $1–2 per bag to porters, and leave a few dollars per night for housekeeping.

Travel tips

Book domestic flights early. Tipping 18–20% is expected at restaurants. Public transport varies wildly — great in NYC, limited elsewhere. A road trip is often the best way to explore.
