Visa requirements

Many nationalities get 30-45 day visa-free entry. An e-Visa is available for 80+ nationalities.

Getting around

The Reunification Express railway and overnight trains run the length of Vietnam, alongside extensive sleeper buses and cheap domestic flights (Vietnam Airlines, VietJet) for longer hops. In cities, the ride-hailing app Grab dominates for both car and motorbike taxis, and metered taxis from reputable firms like Mai Linh and Vinasun are reliable.

Safety

Vietnam is generally safe. Traffic is chaotic in cities. Be aware of motorbike bag snatching.

Tipping customs

Tipping is not traditional but is increasingly appreciated in tourist areas. Leave around 5–10% in restaurants (upscale places may add a service charge), round up taxi fares, and give small amounts to hotel porters, housekeeping, drivers and guides.

Travel tips

Bargain respectfully at markets. Carry small bills in cash. Try street food — it's often the best.
