Common Tourist Scams in Bangkok

Overview

Bangkok is generally safe but has a thriving scam industry targeting tourists. Knowing the common scams will save you money and frustration.

Scams to watch for

Tuk-Tuk 'Sightseeing' Scam

A tuk-tuk driver offers a cheap city tour, then takes you to a 'special deal' at a gem shop or tailor where they earn commission. Don't accept free or suspiciously cheap tuk-tuk tours.

Gem Scam

You're invited to a 'one-day government sale' of gems. The gems are worthless or massively overpriced. Thailand's most costly tourist scam — people have lost thousands.

Closed Attraction Scam

A friendly stranger tells you a temple or palace is 'closed today for a Buddhist holiday' and offers to take you somewhere better. It's never closed — this is always a scam.

Taxi No Meter Scam

Taxi drivers outside tourist areas refuse to use the meter and quote flat rates (always inflated). Insist on the meter: say 'meter, kap/ka'. Walk away if they refuse.

Overpriced Boat Ride

Long-tail boat operators quote one price then demand much more at the end. Agree price in writing before boarding and have exact change.

Friendly Stranger / Card Game

A very friendly local takes you to 'meet his family' where you end up in a rigged card game. Always a scam.
