Common Tourist Scams in Marrakech
Overview
Marrakech's medina is one of the world's great labyrinthine experiences — and also a hotspot for persistent but rarely dangerous scams.
Scams to watch for
False Guide in the Medina
Friendly locals offer to 'show you the way' then demand payment — often aggressively. In the medina, always have your destination on your phone and ignore unsolicited direction offers.
Djemaa el-Fna Performers
Snake charmers, monkey handlers, and henna artists approach with 'free' offers then demand large payments. Don't touch, hold, or accept anything without agreeing a price.
Souk Pressure Selling
Once you show interest in an item, shop owners apply intense pressure. It's okay to walk away at any time — 'no thank you' is a complete sentence.
Henna Scam
Women offer free henna then demand €20-50. Always agree price in advance in writing. Expect to pay €5-10 for a simple design from a reputable stall.
Wrong Change
Check your change carefully — giving back 1-dirham coins instead of 10s is common in busy market situations.
