Common Tourist Scams in Rome
Overview
Rome is relatively safe but pickpockets and tourist traps are extremely common. Stay alert near major monuments and on crowded buses.
Scams to watch for
Gladiator Photo Scam
Men dressed as gladiators near the Colosseum pose for photos then demand €10-20. Agree a price before any photo, or simply decline.
Friendship Bracelet Scam
Someone ties a bracelet on your wrist then demands payment. On Ponte Sant'Angelo bridge and tourist areas. Just keep walking — don't engage.
Picnic Rose Seller
A rose is placed on your table or handed to your date, then payment is demanded. Return it firmly — don't pay.
Bus 40/64 Pickpockets
The Vatican bus routes are notorious for pickpocket gangs working in teams. Keep bags in front, don't use phone, and ideally take the Metro instead.
Restaurant Tourist Traps
Restaurants on/near La Rambla or major monuments charge inflated prices and add hidden 'cover charges'. Walk 1-2 streets away from major sites for better value.
Fake Police
People posing as plain-clothes police ask to check your wallet for counterfeit notes. Real police won't do this — never hand over your wallet.
