Getting Around Bangkok
Overview
Bangkok's transport is improving dramatically with new BTS and MRT lines, but traffic remains horrendous and many areas still require a taxi or boat.
Metro
BTS Skytrain (2 lines) and MRT Blue Line cover main tourist areas. Rabbit Card or MRT card for discounted travel.
Bus
Extensive but complex. BMTA buses are cheap (฿8-25) but slow in traffic. Useful for routes not on rail.
Taxi
Plentiful metered taxis — insist on the meter ('mee-ter'). Should cost ฿60-150 for most city trips.
Rideshare
Grab is essential in Bangkok. More reliable than street taxis and English-language app.
Bicycle
Not recommended in most of Bangkok due to traffic and heat. Some parks have bike rental.
Walkability
Poor to moderate. Heat and traffic make long walks uncomfortable. Many areas lack footpaths.
Travel card
Rabbit Card for BTS, MRT Card for subway — separate systems. Convenience stores often sell them.
