Getting Around London

Overview

London has an extensive transport network, but it's expensive. The Elizabeth Line has transformed east-west connections.

Metro

The Tube (11 lines). Runs 5am–midnight (24-hour Fri/Sat on some lines). Tap Oyster/contactless — zone fares apply.

Bus

Iconic red double-decker buses cover the entire city. Cash not accepted — use Oyster or contactless card.

Taxi

Black cabs are licensed and reliable. Metered fares are expensive. Uber also widely available.

Rideshare

Uber, Bolt, and Free Now all operate. Often cheaper than black cabs.

Bicycle

Santander Cycles (Boris Bikes) with 750+ docking stations. Day hire £1.65 + usage fees.

Walkability

Central London is walkable but the city is very spread out. Key areas (Covent Garden–South Bank) are pleasant walks.

Travel card

Oyster card or tap with contactless bank card. Tube caps your spending at the daily maximum automatically.
