Getting Around New York City

Overview

New York City has the most extensive public transit system in the US. The 24/7 subway is the fastest way around Manhattan and the outer boroughs, complemented by buses, ferries, and ubiquitous taxis.

Metro

The subway runs 24/7 across 472 stations. A single ride is a flat fare regardless of distance. Use OMNY contactless tap-to-pay (cap reaches a free weekly pass) or a MetroCard.

Bus

Extensive bus network covers areas the subway misses, including crosstown routes. Same fare as the subway with free transfers via OMNY/MetroCard. Select Bus Service requires pre-payment.

Taxi

Iconic yellow cabs are hailed on the street or via apps. Flat fare to/from JFK to Manhattan. Metered otherwise with surcharges; tip 15–20%.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft operate everywhere and are often comparable to cab fares. Surge pricing applies at peak times and in bad weather.

Bicycle

Citi Bike has thousands of docking stations. Protected bike lanes are expanding. Day and single-ride passes available via the app.

Walkability

Manhattan is highly walkable with a logical grid. Walking is often faster than driving in Midtown traffic.

Travel card

OMNY (contactless tap) is now the standard — tap a credit card or phone; fares cap at a free 7-day pass after enough rides. MetroCard is being phased out.
