Getting Around Tokyo
Overview
Tokyo has the world's most extensive and punctual public transport network. The metro, JR lines, and private railways cover every corner of the city with military precision.
Metro
Tokyo Metro (9 lines) and Toei Subway (4 lines). Runs 5am–midnight. IC card (Suica/Pasmo) works on all lines. Single fares ¥170–320.
Bus
Extensive bus network but complex for tourists. Best used for areas not served by rail. IC card accepted.
Taxi
Plentiful but expensive. Metered fares start at ¥500. English-speaking drivers are rare but GPS navigation helps.
Rideshare
Uber available but pricey. Japan Taxi app is more commonly used by locals.
Bicycle
Bike rental available in some areas. Cycling is popular in parks but commuting by bike requires navigating traffic.
Walkability
Excellent in most neighborhoods. Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Harajuku are very walkable.
Travel card
Suica or Pasmo IC card — load money and tap on/off any train, bus, or subway. Also works at convenience stores.
