Security & customs

Most visitors need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) arranged online before arrival — have the confirmation ready. There's a security screening at the terminal entrance in addition to the main checkpoint. Standard 100ml liquid rules apply; the arrivals duty-free is well known for selling appliances, but watch your duty allowances when entering Sri Lanka.

Travel tips

If staying in Negombo (beach town 8km away) before heading south or to the cultural triangle, the short taxi ride is preferable to a long Colombo transit. PickMe app (Sri Lanka's Uber equivalent) should be set up before arrival. Sri Lanka rupee is needed — use airport ATMs for initial cash at good rates.
