Overview

San José is Costa Rica's compact, underrated capital — a city that works better as a base for cloud forests, volcanoes, and beaches than as a destination in itself, but whose central market, cultural museums, and neighbourhood craft breweries reward exploration. Barrio Amón's Art Nouveau houses and La California's restaurant row have elevated the capital's image considerably.

Top attractions

National Theatre (Teatro Nacional), Gold Museum, Central Market, Barrio Amón Art Nouveau architecture, Jade Museum, Poás Volcano (day trip), La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Sarapiquí cloud forest, Irazú Volcano

Getting around

Uber is the safest taxi option. InterBus and Tico Bus connect to major tourist destinations. Renting a car (4WD recommended) unlocks the country. TUASA buses serve the airport cheaply.
