Overview

Amman is the Arab world's most relaxed and visitor-friendly capital — a hillside city of white stone buildings, ancient Roman ruins, excellent hummus, and a buzzing restaurant and café scene in the Jabal Amman and Abdali districts. The city is increasingly a destination in itself, not just a base for Petra, with world-class restaurants and galleries.

Getting around

Taxis are cheap and widely available — agree on price or ensure meter use. Uber and Careem work in Amman. The city is spread across hills — walking between districts requires effort. Car hire is recommended for day trips.

Local etiquette

Jordanians are famously hospitable — accept offered coffee or tea, and use your right hand for eating and greetings. Dress modestly, especially women, covering shoulders and knees; carry a scarf for mosque visits. Ask permission before photographing people, and avoid pointing the soles of your feet at others when seated.

Safety

Very safe by regional standards. Jordanians are famously hospitable and protective of guests. Standard city awareness applies in souks and crowded markets. Women may receive unwanted attention — modest dress is recommended.
