Overview
Naypyidaw is Myanmar's purpose-built capital, an eerily spacious city of 20-lane highways, vast government complexes, and a near-replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda. Created from scratch in the 2000s, it feels strangely empty and surreal. Its scale and order contrast sharply with the country's other cities.
Getting around
A private car or taxi is essentially required given the enormous distances between districts.
Local etiquette
Remove shoes at pagodas, dress modestly, and avoid photographing sensitive government or military installations.
Safety
Check current travel advisories given national instability; the city itself is heavily controlled, so avoid photographing government and military sites.
