Overview
Naypyidaw is Myanmar's purpose-built capital, an eerily spacious city of 20-lane highways, vast government complexes, and a near-replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda. Created from scratch in the 2000s, it feels strangely empty and surreal. Its scale and order contrast sharply with the country's other cities.
Top attractions
See the Uppatasanti Pagoda, the empty 20-lane highways, the National Landmarks Garden, and the Water Fountain Garden.
Getting around
A private car or taxi is essentially required given the enormous distances between districts.
