Overview
The Eternal City is an open-air museum where ancient history, Renaissance art, baroque fountains, and world-class pasta collide at every corner.
Getting around
Walking is best in the historic center. Metro has only 2 lines. Taxis from official ranks only.
Local etiquette
Italians greet with a handshake or cheek kisses among friends and appreciate a warm 'buongiorno'. Dress modestly at churches and the Vatican — shoulders and knees must be covered, or you'll be turned away. Cappuccino is a morning-only drink, lunch and dinner are leisurely, and a coperto (cover charge) often replaces tipping.
Safety
Rome is generally safe. Pickpocketing is common near the Colosseum, Vatican, and on buses.
