Overview
Afghanistan is an extremely low-cost destination in terms of basic goods and local services, but the overall cost for international travelers is significantly inflated by mandatory security arrangements, limited accommodation options, and the near-requirement of hiring local fixers or guides. Alcohol is effectively unavailable due to Islamic law, and tourism infrastructure is minimal, making independent travel very difficult and costly relative to what limited amenities are on offer.
Notes
Using shared minibuses or local taxis rather than private vehicles can dramatically cut transport costs, and guesthouses catering to NGO workers often offer safer and more affordable stays than the few formal hotels; always negotiate rates in advance and budget generously for unforeseen security or logistical expenses.
