Overview
Afghanistan is a rugged, landlocked nation of towering mountains, ancient Silk Road cities, and deep cultural heritage spanning Bamiyan's valleys and the bazaars of Herat. Centuries of crossroads history left a legacy of poetry, hospitality, and stunning highland landscapes. Ongoing instability, however, makes it one of the world's most difficult and risky destinations.
Visa requirements
A visa is required for nearly all nationalities and must typically be arranged in advance, though entry conditions are unstable and change frequently.
Safety information
Most governments advise against all travel due to armed conflict, terrorism, and kidnapping risk. Independent tourism is extremely dangerous and consular support is largely unavailable.
Travel tips
Cash in afghanis and US dollars is essential as cards are virtually unusable. Dress very conservatively and always defer to local advice on movement. Connectivity is unreliable, so arrange local contacts before arrival.
