Costa Rica is one of the more expensive countries in Central America, often surprising travelers with prices comparable to parts of Southern Europe. High costs are driven by eco-tourism infrastructure, protected national park fees, adventure activities, and a strong tourism industry that commands premium pricing in popular areas like Manuel Antonio and Arenal. Budget travelers can manage costs by using public buses and eating at local sodas, while mid-range and luxury travelers will find plenty of quality options at elevated prices.

Use the extensive public bus network instead of rental cars or private shuttles, which can cost 5-10 times more for the same routes, and eat at local 'sodas' (family-run diners) where a casado meal with rice, beans, and protein typically costs under $7.
