Mali is a relatively affordable destination for budget travelers, with low costs for local food and transport, though the limited tourism infrastructure and security situation can push prices up for mid-range and luxury options. International flights and in-country travel between regions like Bamako and Mopti can significantly inflate overall trip costs. The CFA franc is the local currency and most transactions are cash-based, so accessing USD-equivalent value requires planning ahead.

Eat at local street stalls and small eateries known as 'gargottes' where traditional dishes like rice and sauce cost very little; also negotiate taxi and moto-taxi fares before boarding as metered cabs are rare and tourists are often quoted higher prices.
