Overview

Mali is a cradle of Sahelian civilization, home to the legendary mud mosques of Djenné, the fabled desert city of Timbuktu and the cliff-dwelling Dogon Country. Its griot musical heritage is world-renowned. Tragically, widespread insecurity now keeps most of these wonders off-limits to travelers.

Visa requirements

Most travelers need a visa obtained in advance via consulate or e-visa; yellow fever vaccination is mandatory.

Safety information

Most of Mali, including the north and centre, faces armed-group activity and high kidnapping risk, and most governments advise against all travel. Bamako is comparatively calmer but still requires extreme caution and expert local advice.

Travel tips

Carry CFA cash as cards rarely work and banking is limited. French is essential, and you must register with your embassy and rely on trusted local contacts. Buy an Orange or Malitel SIM, keep a low profile, and monitor security constantly.
