Travel Costs in Syria

Overview

Syria is nominally very cheap in local currency terms, but the dual exchange rate system, sanctions, and severely degraded infrastructure create unpredictable costs for the rare international traveler who can legally visit. Basic goods and local transport remain inexpensive, but finding functioning mid-range or luxury accommodation outside Damascus is extremely difficult, and international payment methods are largely unusable. Security, logistics, and access challenges mean travelers often incur significant additional costs for guides, fixers, or specialized transport.

Carry sufficient USD or euros in cash as ATMs are largely inaccessible to foreign cards and bank transfers are blocked by sanctions; exchanging at the informal market rate rather than the official rate will stretch your budget considerably further.
