Overview

Syria holds breathtaking heritage, from the ancient ruins of Palmyra and the great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, one of the oldest cities on earth, to the Crusader castle of Krak des Chevaliers. Centuries of civilization layered this crossroads with extraordinary depth. Years of conflict, however, have devastated much of it and made travel perilous.

Visa requirements

Visas are difficult to obtain and conditions are unstable; most visitors require pre-arranged permits, often via a licensed local agency.

Safety information

Syria remains highly volatile after years of war, with risks of conflict, kidnapping, and unexploded ordnance; most governments advise against all travel. Conditions are unpredictable and consular support is minimal.

Travel tips

Bring all funds in cash as banking and cards do not function for foreigners. Arrange trusted local contacts and permits well ahead. Connectivity and infrastructure are severely limited.
