Overview
Entirely surrounded by South Africa and lying above 1,000 metres, Lesotho is a rugged highland kingdom of dramatic passes, blanket-clad Basotho herders on ponies and the southern hemisphere's only Afriski resort. Sani Pass, Maletsunyane Falls and pony trekking are highlights. It offers a refreshing, cool-climate adventure.
Visa requirements
Many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays; an e-visa is available for others, so check current rules.
Safety information
The 'Mountain Kingdom' is generally welcoming, with petty crime and some vehicle theft the main concerns in Maseru. Mountain roads can be hazardous, and winter snow and altitude require preparation.
Travel tips
The loti is pegged to and interchangeable with the South African rand, which is widely accepted, and cards work in Maseru. A sturdy vehicle (ideally 4x4) is best for mountain roads, and pack warm layers year-round. Buy a Vodacom or Econet SIM for data.
