Overview

Spread across four states (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae) and hundreds of islands, the Federated States of Micronesia is a diver's dream and a cultural treasure. Chuuk Lagoon holds the world's greatest concentration of WWII wrecks, Yap is famed for giant stone money and manta rays, and Pohnpei shelters the mysterious ruins of Nan Madol.

Visa requirements

Most tourists, including US citizens, can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. A passport valid for at least 120 days beyond stay and proof of onward travel are required.

Safety information

The FSM is generally safe with low violent crime, though petty theft occurs and alcohol-related trouble can flare at night in some areas. Respect local customs around land and reef access, and note that medical care is basic.

Travel tips

US dollars are the currency, but bring cash since cards and ATMs are limited outside main hotels. Inter-state travel relies on flights that should be booked early. On Yap especially, ask permission before photographing people or entering village land.
