Overview
Myanmar enchants with the thousands of ancient temples spread across the plains of Bagan, the golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, and the stilt-house life of Inle Lake. Deeply Buddhist and long isolated, it preserves traditions like thanaka face paint and longyi dress. Ongoing conflict, however, has severely limited responsible travel.
Visa requirements
Most visitors need a visa, usually obtained through the e-visa system before arrival.
Safety information
Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar faces civil conflict, instability, and arbitrary detention risk; many governments advise against travel. Conditions vary sharply by region and change rapidly.
Travel tips
Carry pristine US dollar bills and kip in cash as cards barely work. Connectivity and banking are unreliable. Research ethical travel carefully given the political situation.
