Overview
Nepal is the roof of the world — home to eight of the ten highest mountains on Earth including Everest. For trekkers, it's the ultimate destination: the Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp, and Langtang Valley are world-class trails. Kathmandu's temples and stupas, the medieval city of Bhaktapur, and the wildlife of Chitwan National Park round out an extraordinary country.
Visa requirements
Tourist visas are available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and at land borders (USD $25 for 15 days, $40 for 30 days, $100 for 90 days). Also available online in advance at least 3 days before arrival.
Safety information
Generally safe for trekkers and tourists. Altitude sickness is the number one danger — ascend slowly on all high-altitude treks. Petty theft in Kathmandu's tourist areas. Roads outside Kathmandu are rough. Always trek with a guide and purchase trekking insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.
Travel tips
Hire a TAAN-certified guide — it supports local livelihoods and significantly enhances the experience. Teahouse trekking is comfortable and social. Carry cash (NPR) — ATMs are scarce on the trail. Altitude medications (Diamox) are worth carrying even if not needed.
