Visa requirements
Tourist visas are available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and at land borders (USD $25 for 15 days, $40 for 30 days, $100 for 90 days). Also available online in advance at least 3 days before arrival.
Getting around
Mountainous terrain means almost no rail, so travel relies on tourist and local buses on winding roads, with domestic flights saving days to Pokhara and trekking gateways like Lukla. In Kathmandu, taxis (negotiate the fare) and the ride-hailing apps Pathao and inDrive are the main ways around.
Safety
Generally safe for trekkers and tourists. Altitude sickness is the number one danger — ascend slowly on all high-altitude treks. Petty theft in Kathmandu's tourist areas. Roads outside Kathmandu are rough. Always trek with a guide and purchase trekking insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.
Tipping customs
Tipping is appreciated and increasingly common in tourist areas. Leave around 10% in restaurants (some add a service charge), round up taxi fares, and tip hotel porters small amounts; trekking guides and porters customarily receive tips at the end of a trek.
Travel tips
Hire a TAAN-certified guide — it supports local livelihoods and significantly enhances the experience. Teahouse trekking is comfortable and social. Carry cash (NPR) — ATMs are scarce on the trail. Altitude medications (Diamox) are worth carrying even if not needed.
