Overview

Niger encompasses the soaring dunes of the Ténéré desert, the dramatic Aïr Mountains and the giraffes of Kouré, the last wild West African herd. Niamey sits on the Niger River, and the country's Tuareg and Hausa cultures are vivid. Insecurity, however, now keeps it largely closed to travelers.

Visa requirements

Most travelers need a visa arranged in advance through a consulate; yellow fever vaccination is mandatory.

Safety information

Niger faces serious security risks including armed groups and kidnapping across much of the country, and most governments advise against travel following recent instability. Border regions are especially dangerous, and any travel requires expert security planning.

Travel tips

Carry CFA cash as cards rarely work and banking is limited. French is essential, and you must register with your embassy and use trusted local contacts. Buy an Airtel or Zamani/Moov SIM, keep a low profile, and monitor security constantly.
