Overview
Turkmenistan is among the world's most secretive countries, famed for the fiery Darvaza gas crater blazing in the Karakum Desert and the surreal white-marble capital of Ashgabat. Ancient Silk Road ruins at Merv and Konye-Urgench add deep history. Travel is tightly managed but utterly unique.
Visa requirements
Most visitors need a visa supported by a letter of invitation and usually a state-licensed guide; transit visas are an alternative for some.
Safety information
Turkmenistan has very low street crime but is a tightly controlled state with heavy surveillance and restricted movement. Follow rules carefully and avoid photographing officials or government buildings.
Travel tips
Carry US dollars to exchange as cards do not work for foreigners. A licensed guide is usually mandatory. Be discreet with photography and internet use, which are restricted.
