Uganda Traveler Essentials

Capital
Kampala
Currency
Ugandan Shilling (UGX USh)
Best time to visit
The drier seasons from June to September and December to February are best for gorilla trekking and wildlife.

Visa requirements

Most travelers need an e-visa obtained online before arrival (or the East Africa tourist visa); yellow fever vaccination is mandatory.

Getting around

Buses and shared taxis (matatus) link towns, boda-boda motorbike taxis and ride-hailing serve cities, and domestic flights reach remote parks.

Safety

Uganda is generally welcoming, with petty crime the main concern in Kampala, so avoid valuables on display and travel after dark with care. Avoid border areas with the DRC and South Sudan, and monitor occasional political tensions.

Tipping customs

Tipping around 10% in restaurants is appreciated, and tipping trackers, guides and drivers on safari is customary.

Travel tips

Carry shillings in cash and use mobile money, as card acceptance is limited outside cities, and bring US dollars for permits. English makes travel easy, and you should book gorilla permits far in advance. Buy an MTN or Airtel SIM, and use ride-hailing apps in Kampala.
