Overview
Never colonized, Ethiopia is a cradle of humanity with its own calendar, alphabet and ancient Orthodox Christianity, seen in the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the castles of Gondar. Dramatic landscapes range from the Simien Mountains to the hellish, technicolour Danakil Depression. Its coffee culture and cuisine are unforgettable.
Visa requirements
Most visitors obtain an e-visa online before arrival; yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your itinerary.
Safety information
Conditions vary widely, with the Tigray, Amhara and parts of Oromia affected by conflict and best avoided. Addis Ababa and classic northern circuit sites are generally manageable, but monitor advisories and watch for petty theft.
Travel tips
Carry birr in cash as cards are rarely accepted and ATMs can be unreliable, and bring US dollars to exchange. Learn a few Amharic phrases and dress modestly at churches. Buy an Ethio Telecom SIM, though connectivity can be cut during unrest.
