- July to October for the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara. January to February is also excellent and less crowded. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (November) offer cheaper prices and green landscapes.
Overview
Kenya is East Africa's definitive wildlife destination — the Maasai Mara's Great Migration of wildebeest (July–October) is one of nature's greatest spectacles. From the snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya to the turquoise Indian Ocean beaches of Diani, Nairobi's cosmopolitan energy to the flamingo-pink shores of Lake Nakuru, Kenya is endlessly rewarding.
Visa requirements
Kenya introduced an e-Visa system replacing the old Visa-on-Arrival. Apply online at evisa.go.ke before travel. Costs USD $50 for most nationalities. EAC citizens (Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, etc.) enter visa-free.
Safety information
Exercise heightened awareness. Nairobi has high rates of petty theft and opportunistic crime — avoid walking at night and use trusted transport. Safari areas and tourist circuits are well-monitored and generally safe. Always follow your guide's instructions on game drives.
Travel tips
Book reputable safari operators — a good guide makes the difference between spotting a lion and missing it entirely. M-Pesa mobile money is used everywhere — set up an account if you have a Kenyan SIM. Nairobi traffic can be brutal — allow extra time for airport transfers.
