- Best time to visit
- July to October for the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara. January to February is also excellent and less crowded. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (November) offer cheaper prices and green landscapes.
Visa requirements
Kenya introduced an e-Visa system replacing the old Visa-on-Arrival. Apply online at evisa.go.ke before travel. Costs USD $50 for most nationalities. EAC citizens (Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, etc.) enter visa-free.
Getting around
The modern SGR train links Nairobi and Mombasa comfortably, while domestic flights save time to safari hubs and the coast and matatu minibuses and buses handle most overland travel. In Nairobi, ride-hailing apps Uber, Bolt and Little are popular and safer than hailing taxis on the street.
Safety
Exercise heightened awareness. Nairobi has high rates of petty theft and opportunistic crime — avoid walking at night and use trusted transport. Safari areas and tourist circuits are well-monitored and generally safe. Always follow your guide's instructions on game drives.
Tipping customs
Tipping is welcomed and increasingly expected in tourism. Leave around 10% in restaurants if no service charge is added, round up taxi fares, and tip hotel porters and housekeeping small amounts; safari guides and drivers customarily receive a daily tip.
Travel tips
Book reputable safari operators — a good guide makes the difference between spotting a lion and missing it entirely. M-Pesa mobile money is used everywhere — set up an account if you have a Kenyan SIM. Nairobi traffic can be brutal — allow extra time for airport transfers.
